A Prayer in Spring

I have had my hands in the dirt again and I couldn't be more thrilled! I've been weeding my garden and planting seeds. I even added a couple varieties of irises and poppies to the array of perennials surrounding our swimming pool.
One afternoon this week, I was pleasantly surprised as I looked out my window to see daffodil sprouts shooting up throughout my garden. When I went out to inspect, I also noticed almost all of my perennials plants reemerging through the soil.
I'm definitely an amateur at this gardening thing, and I wasn't sure if my plants would come back again. The stems and leaves that remained after their winter pruning were terribly brown and lifeless looking. At the sight of the bright green leaves at the base of each plant, I couldn't help but think of the new life God creates in our hearts when He regenerates our souls from death to life. What a beautiful picture to see!
I'm so grateful spring is finally here! (I was starting to think it would never come!) What a glorious season to enjoy!

Candy Girl

I couldn't help but think of my Boo when John showed me this Seinfeld video (except I don't think she has a moron, idiot brain!). Recently, Alyssa and Julianna saved up all their candy for a trip we were planning to take. Both of them had a bucketful by the time we left! Seems like every time I turn around one of them
is chomping on some sort of treat, or I'm stepping on candy wrappers! Julianna, in particular, is always looking for ways to earn or scheme a lollipop or a pack of gum. In fact, candy was
all she wanted for Christmas this year. She is officially our
candy girl.

Whom Shall I Fear?

I am a wallflower.
John and Maggie think it's pretty funny that I think that about myself. But it's true! I've always been quiet and reserved, more shy than outgoing. Although I'd totally prefer to stay at home and hang out with my family all-the-time... on occasion society calls. Now that the boys are in school those occasions are becoming more frequent. Just yesterday, I had a meeting with Spencer's teacher. And the day before, he had a school performance. When in public, as silly as it seems, I often wonder if I don't look at other people, maybe they won't speak to me. But it's inevitable my eyes wander, and someone says "hello" and introduces his or herself.
I called my sister on the way home from Spencer's performance to see if she also feels awkward in those situations. (I was happy to hear she does). I'm not sure why, but in a roomful of women relatively the same age as me, I still feel like I'm fifteen. Even when meeting with Spencer's teacher I came away thinking I sounded like a big doofus. John and I talked about how I scrutinize the way I come across to people and the pride it reveals in my heart. I want to sound good. I want people to respect me.
This morning, I was reminded of my true position in this world as I listened to Casting Crowns in the car. Although I am not crazy about the tune, the words are perfect:

"I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
A vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I'm calling
Lord, You catch me when I'm falling
And You've told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours"

Praise God, He doesn't give up on me... but chooses to use me in spite of my sinfulness. Even if I am a big doofus. ;)

Happy 29th Birthday, John!

For John's birthday I surprised him with an overnight stay at Mast Farm Inn. (Ok, it wasn't actually his "29th" birthday, we just like to make him feel better.) The trip was totally a last minute plan, which says a lot about the kind of friends I have. (Thanks Gail, Kristin, Jess, Celia, and Michelle for watching the kids!). We had a very restful, relaxing time, which is just what we needed.
Since we were in Maggie's stompin' grounds, she made the cakes and we celebrated at her house too! (Thanks, Magz!) ;)

Gardening and a Few Ramblings

Other than pool parties, I have been busy caring for my flowers. A hugely rewarding project. Each morning I love to spend time in my quiet backyard to focus on the goodness of our Lord. It is a peaceful haven, and I feel so blessed.
I'm also thankful for my little helpers, who (I think) are achieving an appreciation for God's creativity as they see His creation thriving in their own backyard. We recently hung a few birdfeeders, and have acquired a couple birdbaths. Watching and identifying birds has been a delight.
As the summer comes to an end, I've also been gearing up for the new school year and relatively new season of life. For those of you who do not know yet, Noah will be attending "real" school this year at Covenant Classical in Concord. He will be entering the seventh grade. When John and I began homeschooling Noah it was our hope to keep him home through his highschool years, but as he's gotten older it has become clear to us that he would benefit from a traditional school setting. The academics offered and extracurricular opportunities will hopefully spur him on to excel in his overall education. CCS is a highly respected academic facility. Some of his buddies already attend there, and he couldn't be more excited.
Please pray for a smooth transition for Noah, my biggest concern would be academic. Covenant is known to be uniquely difficult. Also, he will be going from a classroom of four to a classroom of twenty! Noah has always relied heavily on my one-on-one assistance. I hope he will grow more independent quickly!
In addition to transition, please pray for his character to grow in godly leadership and not to succumb to negative peer pressure. Homeschooling does allow parents to protect children from some of the harsh realities that are sadly introduced to children at too-young-of-ages (in my opinion). Though Noah is current on world events, (more so even than myself, he's an avid reader of World Magazine), he certainly has not had to endure the peer pressures that I faced by his age. I'm not hugely concerned about this issue, (Noah's a good kid), but I still covet your prayers for him and for wisdom for us in leading him through these years.
Thank you so much! I feel so privileged to have so many wonderful people walking through these years with us. You are a blessing to me!

Crazy Summer Daze

For the few of you who still visit this blog, I am grateful this
isn't the only place you go for regular updates about the Morrison family. Now that we all peruse Facebook, I've found it much easier to post video and pictures on there... leaving the blog to gather cyber dust. On occasion, the rusty wheels of my brain begin to turn around some story or event that I deem "blog worthy" and here I am again. Sorry for my absence, but I think it's inevitable this utility will be receiving less and less of my attention.
This summer has been particularly crazy around our household, especially July (notice not a single event was posted). Our church has designated July as our Sabbatical month of the year, temporarily postponing all meetings, except for Sunday mornings. The goal is to allow people to concentrate on their families as well as having time to reach out to others. We chose to spend the month opening our home to the small groups John oversees. Since we have the pool, our home is very conducive to large summer gatherings.
Altogether we had a total of six large cookouts in our home, at least one a week. The groups ranged from twenty people to nearly fifty. Here are a few pictures:

Upon Gail's suggestion (my personal homeschool guru), we've been following a book written by Andrew Pudewa entitled Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization. We've been using incentives to motivate the children to memorize each poem. (Money talks.) It's been so much fun, and the kids are doing a great job!

Spring Has Sprung

We're always enthusiastic about all the critters spring brings about. This gray tree frog showed up in our backyard. The kids got a kick out of watching it climb up our window with its sticky feet. (Totally cool, if you ask me.) Slightly slimy, it was apparent immediately he wasn't a common toad, despite his bumpy gray appearance.
Anytime we look at these creatures up close, I am again amazed. Don't we serve a great God?!

This is what I've been up to lately, and I've had such a grand time doing it! These are only a few of the things I've planted. I've also planted knock-out roses, gardenias, a yuletide camelia bush, tomatoes, oregano, rosemary, parsley, blueberry bushes, jessamine, coreopsis, lantana, lady banks roses, peonies, phlox, pinks... the lists goes on. It has been glorious!
I love the spring!

Bracing Myself for the Future

Getting braces on Noah and Alyssa has been a regular reminder of their rapid progression towards adolescence...another step towards that phase of life that makes most parents cringe in apprehension. Books such as Paul Tripp's Age of Opportunity and Carolyn Mahaney's Girl Talk pair up on my reading list. A chapter here and there to answer the latest question or dilemma.
But it's an exciting season as well. The kids are beginning to think through their own decisions and beliefs. They are beginning to evaluate their hearts and personal choices they make. Hopefully the training we've done so far is beginning to bear fruit and our Christian faith will become their own.
I can be tempted to fear the upcoming years, but I am enthusiastic about it as well. I don't think I've ever felt more of a need to pursue discernment from others, and to seek God, from Whom all wisdom flows. And slowly, I am learning to loosen the protective restraints we've placed upon them in their earlier years. But I still want to hold on.
Training hearts while training teeth. Never thought braces would bring on so much reflection! Surely their symbolism will keep me on my knees, as I'm bracing myself for the future.

Bidgie's Third Birthday

This was one of my all-time favorite birthday parties. Maggie and I began planning a few months prior to the party via email... bouncing ideas back-and-forth off eachother. (I always say we make a great team.) ; )
We began the celebration with doggie ears, collars and face painting, and sang a few "doggie songs" to put us in the puppy mood. My niece, Kathryn, recently became the proud owner of a poodle-mix puppy, and brought him over as the guest-of-honor. The children were thrilled to play with a real, live, (very-active) puppy-dog. Next, Maggie led the children in Obedience School, where all the little "puppies" learned how to sit, beg, roll-over and speak. Then they enjoyed some "puppy chow" and milk shakes in their own little doggie bowls. Following the snack, we read a little story and all the children ran off to dig up some bones, which they later used in a game of Fetch. Lastly, we had the most adorable cake (Maggie's discovery online) and opened presents.
Some of my favorite moments were during the gift opening, as Lauren cheerfully thanked each person who gave her a gift, and even allowed another child to open one of her presents for her. She was simply delightful. It also was a joy and honor to have Jamie and Linda celebrate with us and the opportunity to introduce them to some of the people we love most.
Lauren's birthday, as each of our children's birthdays tend to do, was another reminder of the many kindnesses God has so graciously bestowed upon us. It was a reminder of the many people: family, friends, and church members, that He has placed in our lives. I am so grateful for them all.

We are getting our fill of snowy days this winter. We've gone sledding in Boone twice this season, skiing at Sugar, and most recently skiing at Winterplace. Hoping to post more pictures soon.

Two Valentines

God has blessed me with two Valentines in my life. The obvious one being my true love, John. The other is a little girl who came to me on March 8, 1998, then two and a half weeks old.Alyssa was born on Valentine's Day and had spent her first couple of weeks in foster care. John and I had made the decision to adopt again just a couple months before she was born, and had no idea God would bring this little one into our lives so quickly. Only two weeks after we completed our paperwork, homestudy, and profile album, Alyssa joined our family!
Alyssa has always been full of life and adventure, though my favorite personality traits in Alyssa are her servant's heart and her generosity. Alyssa regularly gives to others, she shares without being asked and often spends her money on others. This kindness truly characterizes her, it's part of who she is.
I'm so excited to see Alyssa growing up to be such a lovely young lady, but especially since her decision to follow Christ. This has been a wonderful year in Alyssa's life, as she has been reborn in Christ, and can now celebrate an even more significant birthday in Him. What a joy for John and I as we watch her responding to the Lord's conviction as her desire to please Him is continuing
to grow.
Alyssa, we love you with all of our hearts and thank God for bringing you into our lives eleven years ago.

Grateful

As Thanksgiving has come and gone, I am, again, grateful for my family. The holiday season does that to me.
In light of that gratefulness, my mind shifts to one of my family members who is not with us this holiday season, instead she has chosen to leave her father and mother and brother and sister for the sake of the kingdom (Luke 18:29).
Five months ago, my niece Katie, began an eleven-month missions trip with the World Race. Katie, presently stuck in Bangkok due to political protesting throughout the city, recently posted this video:

As I have watched each of Katie's videos documenting her journey, I am ashamed of how self-focused I can be, living my comfortable suburban life while so much suffering is going on around me. I am too quick to forget the (approximate) 143 million orphans worldwide. These children will not be with family this holiday season, their lives have been shattered by tragedy.

Katie, thank you for the joy you are bringing these children in the midst of their sorrow, in particular for laying down your life in order to share the gospel with them that they may, someday, experience lasting joy with their Father in Heaven. You are bringing Him much glory as you continue to pour out your life for these people. Thank you for your example to all of us at home. We love you and miss you very much.

Praying for Our Children

I read this fabulous reminder this morning from Praying the Scriptures for Your Children by Jodie Berndt. (Thanks, Jamie!)

"Before I started writing this book, I polled more than one hundred mothers to see what they wanted most for their children. My informal surveys, tucked into our family's Christmas cards and randomly distributed to friends and neighbors, listed everything from health and safety to academic success and strong family ties. I asked folks to check their top five desires or prayer requests, and I eventually used this feedback to shape the book's table of contents.
On the survey I also included an "other" category, where folks could comment on the topics or add their own thoughts. My friend Troy Lee shared this story of how God answered her prayers for her children:

"Before each of my children was born I prayed that they would be first a Christian and second healthy. I prayed that as long as we would be allowed to enjoy our children on earth, it would be long enough for them to accept Christ as their Savior. In other words, please let them live to be saved- however old or however young.
This prayer has been answered for two of my children so far, but very significantly in Abner IV's life. You may know that he died at age seven and a half. Seven months prior to his unexpected death, Abner prayed with his father to accept Christ and was baptized the next week. God let him live long enough to be saved.
This is even more interesting as we found out exactly what Abner died of (it took nine weeks to determine). Endocardial fibroelastosis is very rare. We were told that Abner's case would be published in a medical journal because in the last forty years, only two other people in the world had ever lived past age one with this condition.
And I keep thinking, God let him live long enough to be saved. Praise Him!"

Isn't this an amazing story? Where others might see only pain and loss, Troy Lee recognized the hand of God and the answer to her prayers. But, you might ask, shouldn't she have asked God to make her children healthy-no matter what? And if she had, would she have been spared the anguish of losing a child?
I can't answer these questions, but I know that in placing her children's salvation at the top of her prayer list-and in praying for them even before they were born-Troy Lee demonstrated an incredible maturity and depth of insight. She recognized what so many of us miss: that a relationship with the Savior is more important than anything else. A child can be blessed with a healthy body, good grades, an outstanding character, a wealth of friends, and an athletic scholarship to the college of his or her choice-but without a relationship with Jesus, it all counts for nothing."

An Update on My Dad

A few of you may not know that my father is no longer living
with us.
Last week, John and I made the decision to place Dad into full- time care at a local assisted living facility. The establishment is actually located in our neighborhood, and is less than one mile from our home. Dad moved in on Monday.
My dad had taken several serious falls in our home since he moved in last April. As the falls became more frequent, (on the average of three times/week), it became very evident that it was not safe for him to continue to live here. Although this was a difficult decision to make, the Lord has made the transition smooth and quick for all of us.
Please continue to pray for my Dad, in particular that his relationship with the Lord would deepen in these last days/years of his life.
John and I have been amazed at the numerous people who have helped us throughout the last eight months. Beyond family, our church has been a regular source of encouragement, service, and means of grace to us during this season. Thank you all so much for your prayers, your council, and your care for Dad and our children. (Several families in our church rotated babysitting/eldercare in order for me and John to continue having "date nights" and to attend important meetings while Dad was living with us.)
We love you all and appreciate you more than you know.

Americans head for the voting precincts today as the 2008 election is now at hand. Already, some 20 million citizens have voted through early voting options. Some expect a record turn-out for today's election. In any event, millions of citizens will participate in the first duty of freedom -- the freedom to vote.

There is so much at stake. We hear every election cycle that the stakes have never been higher. In one sense, this is usually also true. There is always the sense that there is more at stake this year than last, and, given the way issues unfold, that perception often seems validated by the times.

Christians face the responsibility to vote, not only as citizens, but as Christians who seek to honor and follow Christ in all things. But, beyond the vote, we also bear responsibility to pray for our nation.

First, we should pray that God will bless America with leaders better than we deserve. Democratic systems inevitably reflect the electorate's decisions, and these decisions reveal underlying worldviews. And, truth be told, all we can expect from democracy is the government we deserve. We must pray for a government and for leaders better than we deserve. May God grant us mercy as he reigns and rules over all things, including this election.

Second, we should pray that Americans will be motivated to fulfill the responsibilities of citizenship, yet also that we will be stripped of an unhealthy and idolatrous confidence in the power of government to save us. God has given us the gift of rulers and governments in order to restrain evil, uphold righteousness, and provide for civil order. No human ruler can save. No government official or office holder can heal the human heart, solve the sin problem, or accomplish final justice. These powers belong to God and God alone.

Third, we must pray that Americans will vote by conscience, not merely on the basis of celebrity or emotion. Christian citizens must vote to uphold righteousness and contend for righteous and just laws. But, at the same time, we must repent of moralism and the tacit assumption that better laws would produce better people.

Fourth, we must pray that Americans will vote to defend the least among us -- and especially those who have no vote. This starts, but does not end, with concern for the unborn and for the recovery of respect for the dignity and sanctity of every single human life at every stage of development, from conception until natural death.

Fifth, we should pray that God will prick the conscience of the nation on issues of morality, righteousness, and respect for marriage as the central institution of human civilization. So much ground appears to have been lost on these issues. We need to pray that much ground can be regained.

Sixth, we should pray that God will protect these candidates and their families. They have been through an arduous ordeal and now face the deadline of the vote. They are physically exhausted and now face the judgment of the people. They are public figures, but they are also flesh and blood human beings, who are fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters. Their families have withstood much. We should pray for their marriages and their children. May God protect them.

Seventh, we should pray that the election is conducted with honor, civility, respect, and justice. We must pray that we do not face another round of litigation after an election. This brings democracy into disrepute. May there be a clear winner, not a contested result.

Eighth, we must pray that Americans will be prepared to accept the results of the election with respect and kindness. This will be no time for rancor, condemnations, and conspiracy theories. Instead, we must pray that God will settle the hearts of the people. May Christians be ready to respond with prayer, respect for office, and a gentle spirit. Others will be watching.

Ninth, we should pray that this election would lead to even greater opportunities to preach the Gospel, and that the freedom of the church will be respected, honored, and protected.

Tenth, we must pray for the church, praying that the church of the Lord Jesus Christ would be strengthened in the truth, grounded in the faith, and empowered for witness and ministry. May the church, the sign of the coming kingdom, be faithful to declare the Gospel -- knowing that this is the only message that will save.

May God grant us mercy and grace as we seek to fulfill our responsibilities as citizens -- and our responsibilities as Christians. This world is not our home, but we do bear responsibilities as followers of Christ as we are living here.

More Science Experiments

This past week we also learned about minerals, including crystals. We made salt crystals which turned out very tiny (almost microscopic!). Another project was to make rock candy.... but sugar crystals take a long time to form. (We've been waiting for over a week.)
In the meantime, I found some other crystals to make...using Borax! (I'm not sure what chemical in Borax is so reactive, we've used Borax to make slime before too. Powerful stuff.) These crystals formed overnight! It's always exciting to see such dramatic results in a short period of time.

The kids are in the process of learning about simple animals, namely...worms.
After their lesson this afternoon, Alyssa, Emma, Abigail, and Julianna reluctantly gathered around while I dissected an earthworm.
I have to admit it definitely made me squirm! In fact, I'm still feeling a little nauseous! To top it off, our worms were a little small, too small to really examine their organs. It just looked

like brown and white mush. Maybe my X-acto blade was too

dull. Oh well, guess we have to do it again! (Yuk!)

Spencer spent the last three days with Uncle Mike, Aunt Lisa,
and Maggie in Boone. On the day after he arrived, we received
a phone call from Maggie...up in a tree.
Apparently, Lisa, Mags, and Spence went for a hike through a pasture. Little did they know the pasture was frequented not only by several cows, but also by their rather large mate. As the curious cattle came to check out their visitors, the hikers headed up an apple tree where they remained for about 15 minutes until the bovines departed.
Later, I spoke to Spencer on the phone. When asked about the adventure, Spencer replied, "Mom, it's not funny! It was really scary!" : )

Last week, the kids learned about assembly lines. After their lesson, they all lined up to build candy cars. Everyone had a little job to complete. Alyssa attached the steering shafts and back "trunks", Noah did the steering wheels and front "bumpers", Spencer applied the wheels, and Julianna added the seats.

It feels like Noah's birthday was a two-week event! First celebrating as a family, then hosting a pool party, and finally his trip to Carowinds with his buddy, Chris. Here are a few clips...

Growing Up

Noah's birthday was quite different this year than it has been in the past. For one thing, Noah decided he didn't care to have a "themed" birthday party. Although it was important to him to have his best buddies over to celebrate, and to do something special with just one of them at a later date.
On Sunday, we'll have a pool/pizza party to which five of his friends have been invited. (I may drum up goody bags... kids like candy no matter how old they get!). For the following Sunday, he has asked to bring Christopher with him to Carowinds. (Originally, he wanted to go to a Panthers' game with Chris, but didn't want to wait for the first home game.)
Rather than a specially shaped and decorated cake, Noah told me he would like a chocolate raspberry cheesecake instead. (How's that for particular?)
For Noah's birthday gifts, he requested very specific things:
A pair of Vans, (deja vu!); a sports jacket; two Webkinz with clothing; and....drumroll...two rats. (I know, "ew".)
Noah also asked to shop for his gifts himself. So, yesterday he went on a shopping spree with his Daddy.

Yes, my baby is growing up. We have seen Noah maturing in many areas of his life this year:

Noah has become a more grateful young man. Last night, Noah came out of his room at eleven o'clock. Our conversation went like this:
Noah: "Mom, I have to get my Mossflower book, if that's ok."
Me: "It's too late, Noah, you need to go to sleep."
Noah: "Ok." (He turns to leave.)
Noah: "Mom? Thank you so much for everything today. I've been so blessed."

John mentioned Noah stated his gratefulness for each of his birthday purchases several times yesterday, as well as the time spent gathering them. Noah's thankfulness has become more of a regular occurrence.
Secondly, Noah is a deeply caring person. He regularly watches out and expresses concern for his grandpa. He often jumps up to help Grandpa, to move things out of his way or get things for him, and he lets me know if Grandpa needs any help.
Noah has also grown in sentimentality. Grandma Bett-Bett annually has had each of the children spend the night in celebration of their birthdays. Last year, Bett thought Noah had "outgrown" this tradition, so Noah didn't go. Well, Noah has expressed many times his desire to be with Bett-Bett since then. Pleasantly surprised, Bett will be having him over sometime in the next couple of weeks.
I have also seen an increased diligence in Noah with his schoolwork. He has not complained about his assignments at all, and has even mentioned enjoying his work several times in the last couple of weeks. For a homeschool mom, this is a BIG deal.

Most importantly, we have seen an increased maturity in Noah's relationship with the Lord. A few months ago Noah responded to an altar call at the Rebelution conference by Alex & Brett Harris. Although this was his third time expressing a desire to the Lord to be a Christian, we have seen a more sober awareness of the truth of the Gospel, and his knowledge of doctrine continues to be defined and embraced. He has read several difficult books on spiritual truth including: Do Hard Things, How Can I Be Sure I'm a Christian, Humility, Gospel for Real Life, Living a Cross Centered Life, and is currently reading Morning and Evening for his daily devotions.
The fruit we have seen in Noah's life this year gives me much hope and excitement for the upcoming teen years. What a privilege and joy we have in seeing our children grow.

to be transferred to Charlotte, but also to buy the house just two doors down from us!

Please pray for my brother-in-law, Stuart. Last night Stuart had a heart attack. Thankfully he is doing well, but I can't help but grieve for this precious man's health. Stuart is one of the most fun-loving men in our family. My kids love him, and rightfully so. We all do. Married to John's sister with two grown sons, I'm sure they all need your prayers.
This definitely comes under the "Life is Hard" category, and we appreciate your prayers.

*Update: Stuart received four shunts in his heart, but thankfully did not need any bi-pass surgery. He's recovering well. Thanks for your prayers!

No, I'm not depressed (or suicidal!). We are not going through any MAJOR trials right now, but I definitely can relate to this quote by my favorite dead guy.
I remember especially feeling this way after my Mother passed away. I came to the stark realization that Life is Hard. Losing people you love the most will do that to you. When I am faced with difficult situations: mortifying sin, dying to myself, watching loved ones struggle, seeing the results of this fallen world... I cannot help but look forward to heaven. Can anyone relate?
I'm challenged by this reminder to take a deeper look at my motives.
Lord, help us to love you more!

I've been reading a fabulously challenging book by Paul David Tripp. Here's an excerpt:

After months of frustration, a believer will get into a heated argument over garden boundaries with his neighbor, forgetting how much more important it is to be salt and light in the man's life than how many flowers were planted over the property line. For a moment, a man will get more of a sense of well-being from the look and smell of his brand new car than he does from the condition of his heart. For a season, the affection and appreciation of another human being will become more functionally important to us than the gracious, forgiving, and adopting love of our heavenly Father. For a moment, a succulent steak becomes more important to us than a soul that has been satisfied by the Living Bread. When asked why she wanted to go on the World Race, Katie replied,

I believe in love.

Call me a romantic, call me an idealist, call me naive...but it's the truth. I believe in the love of God and His Son Jesus Christ, because it is a love has changed my heart forever. I'm indelibly marked with the love that put Jesus on the cross. Like skin tattooed, my heart is stained with the love of Christ. I cannot get rid of it--nor do I want to--and nothing I will ever do can separate me from it. The love of Jesus washes over me when I seek His face, and I am drowned in the glory of it...but rather than earthly drowning, which is a nightmare, this drowning is a welcome overpowering of my life; this love is eclipsing my humanity and my sinfulness, creating a new Spirit where once the death of sin reigned, and calling me ever deeper into the presence of my Creator.

Oh yes, I believe in love. And because I've seen the power of the love of Jesus in my own life, I believe Jesus just wants me to show others that love.

John didn't realize I was taking this video of him reading to the girls last night. Right now he is at the pond fishing with all the kids, and earlier today he took the big kids to the pool. (That was after he taxied a few to their friends' houses, and brought some buddies over here.) My Family

Ever since my father moved in with us, I have been marveling at the many kindnesses shown to me through my family and my church. Today, I wanted to take some time to thank God for one of the greatest gifts He gave me...eight brothers and sisters.

Let me introduce you:

Since my Father's fall, my family has rallied together to support and care for him in many ways: visits, meals, cleaning, phone calls, taking care of his bills, overseeing his medical care, managing his house and car, packing, organizing, encouraging and praying... just to name a few. John and I have benefitted from their care as well.

When John and I made the decision to have Dad live with us, ~~all~~ more-than-one of my siblings expressed concern about strain it would put on our already-extraordinarily-busy-household. However, knowing the alternative was much less desirable (nursing home), they have been supportive and looked for ways to care for us in the process.

For example, Dad's freezer is full of approximately 40 home-cooked meals provided by my sisters. Dad chooses one almost every day for lunch. (Just heat and serve!) Better yet, on occasion, they provide a meal large enough to feed all of us!

Several family members have gone above and beyond what we could have imagined by creatively thinking of ways to bless us while we care for Dad. Providing respite, whether by spending an afternoon or evening out with Dad has been an enormous means of grace to us all. My brother, Chris, even surprised me by organizing a family calendar arranging weekly respite for us, and time for each of them to spend with Dad. My dear sister-in-law, Lisa, is regularly planning events with the children, including taking them to the zoo, out for a movie and dinner, Carowinds or overnights in the mountains. Another sister, recently asked to bring Alyssa with her to Disney! (Shhh...Alyssa doesn't know about this yet.) Pat has helped tremendously with Dad's medical needs, researching and ordering equipment, talking with doctors...and reassuring me! EVERYONE has called or sent notes encouraging me and John in our efforts to care for my Dad.

I simply do not know what I would do without my family. Each of my siblings are uniquely wonderful and so dear to me. I'm so thankful to call them "mine".

Thank you, Kathleen, Pat, Mike, Ellen, Lori, Chris, Rich and Gail for the many ways you each have cared for me and my family over the last two months. Mom would be so proud. I'm so thankful the Lord has entwined our lives together.
